Regular tax filing deadline

"Tax Day" is typically April 15. If it falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. In 2025, it remains April 15.

Federal expatriate extension

If you live abroad, the IRS grants an automatic extension to file until June 16, 2025, but any taxes owed are still due by April 15, 2025, with interest accruing on unpaid balances.

Payments made after June 16 incur both interest and failure-to-pay penalties.

NOTE!
  • Any taxes owed are still due by April 15 (or the next business day if it falls on a weekend/holiday). While expats get an automatic 2-month extension to file, interest accrues on unpaid taxes from April 15. Payments made after June 17 will incur both interest and late payment penalties.

Extension until October 15

If documents are delayed, you can request an additional extension until October 15, 2025, by filing Form 4868.

Expats needing further extensions for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion can file Form 2350.

FBAR (FinCEN 114)

The FBAR is due on April 15, 2025, with an automatic extension to October 15, 2025. Expats with over $10,000 in foreign financial accounts at any point during 2024 must file.

This includes not just savings/checking accounts but also brokerage, mutual funds, and certain business accounts.

NOTE!
  • The FBAR is due April 15, with an automatic extension to October 15. NB FBAR is filed with the Treasury, not the IRS.
